Classmates

Mel Westmeyer

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: Artist
Comment: Due, in part, to Mr. Yancy's encouragement at MHS I studied Art and Art History at K-State; earning a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History.

After receiving my MFA in Painting at the University of Illinois, I moved to Chicago and opened Westmeyer Studio.

At Westmeyer Studio we (myself and the artists who worked for me) created commissioned paintings, murals, and wall finishes for restaurants, bars, and private homes for over 40 years.

My older son Travis, wife and grandkids live nearby in Oak Park, IL; and my younger son Charlie works for a logistics company here in Chicago.

My wife Dorie has had careers in Advertising and Real Estate.

Rascal the Cat (orange tabby) recently turned 15.

Westmeyer Studio is still around, but I work only on my own paintings now. Still doing my oil paintings, but also playing around with digital art recently.

While I am slow to update my website, some of my stuff can be seen at westmeyerstudio.com, if anyone is interested.

We spend time enjoying all of what Chicago has to offer. And, until recently, we had a second home and studio in Wisconsin overlooking Lake Michigan. We now have a place in Fort Myers, FL - - so, new stuff to paint!

Stay groovy class of '69!

Comment: I would love seeing everyone, yet the only time I can attend a class reunion would be in the summer or perhaps over the Christmas Holiday.

Please share what you have been doing for the last 5 years?: After one seemingly long lifetime; I decided to attend KSU and graduated in 1991 with a degree in education. Taught several years in Manhattan at both Bluemont and Woodrow Wilson Elementary Schools. In 2000 was offered a job with the Department of Defense schools in Japan and accepted. Lived there with my youngest son for six years teaching 6th grade. Relocated in 2006 to Germany where I am currently living and teaching first grade. I come home the day after school is out in June and return the end of August. I purchased a family home on Bluemont Avenue there in Manhattan in 1997, so I still have a place to call home in Manhattan. I also come home every Christmas. Can't do without time with my kids- Holly, Brandon, Adam, and Brent and their families; but mostly the 3 grand'boys'!! My dad is still there as well as my sisters and their families, too. I look forward to retiring one day in or around the Manhattan area.

Please share what you have been doing for the last 5 years?: Hey Greg:

Good to see you are still hanging in there. I was sorry to learn of your wife, Denise's, passing.

I wish I could be there with you guys for the reunion but I just returned from Las Vegas so the timing is not too good for me.

I just recently retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan afer close to 24 years of service. I was a senior healthcare analyst. I am looking forward to doing some tutoring for the adult literacy program.

My son got married three years ago. He married a girl from the U.K. So far, no grandkids, bummer!

Tell everyone I said hi and to enjoy our 40th reunion. Have a beer for me!

Spouse or Partner's Name: AJ Giliberto
Please share what you have been doing for the last 5 years?: Still working at K-State with the Department of Geography and don\\\'t see that changing anytime soon. I spend most my time biking, working in my yard and attending the many softball, T-ball, soccer games that I can with my grandchildren. AJ and I still live in Riley KS and enjoy the small town atmosphere that it provides - a great area for biking adventures.
